If you're a programmer, or if you know someone who is: Run MP.Exe
(on EGA/VGA monitors) and watch for our custom screen fonts, lines,
mouse cursor shapes and "hour glass" symbols. These are part of
our Font Pak programmer's edition, which ANY programmer can use.
"Catalog.Doc" has descriptions of Font Pak and our other programs.

Please print this quick reference guide several times using dif-
ferent options -- to learn which of MP's options you prefer, and
which options and fonts work best on your printer.
MP's Main Menu
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
MP is menu driven -- so you needn't worry about remembering long
lists of arcane command line switches. To run MP type: MP <─┘
(or MP /bw if you have a laptop and want to use black and white,
monochrome mode). MP then asks for the name of a file to print:
════ Print which file? <F2> = Directory <Esc> = Quit ═════
▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒
Type in a file name and press <─┘, or press <F2> to choose a file
from a menu. TO QUIT (and print nothing), press <Esc>. If you
use a mouse you may click left on <F2> = Directory or <Esc> = Quit.
Once you select a file to print, MP displays the following menus.
Select the options you want, then press <P> to print. Notice that
some options are already checked ("√"). MP saves the options you
select so the next time you run MP, it pre-selects the options you
prefer. If you haven't run MP yet, MP pre-selects options that
many people use.

Selecting Options in MP's Menus
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
There are actually 6 separate menus in MP's main menu. In each
menu, check off the option(s) you want. In some menus you'll
"pick 1" option. In other menus you may "√ all that apply."
Some options let you choose different levels (e.g., a Top margin
of 0 - 9 rows). In these, you keep "selecting" the option to
choose the level you want. For example, if you print title lines,
you can select the "Print Title at: " option (2nd menu) to choose
where you want titles to print (top or bottom of the page), and
whether we should print a solid line above (or below) title lines.
To select options using the keyboard:
─────────────────────────────────────
Within a menu, press the Up and Down cursor keys to highlight an
option, then press <Space> or <Enter> to select that option.
Press PgDn to move to the next menu, or PgUp to move back a menu.
To select options using a mouse:
────────────────────────────────
Move the mouse cursor to any option in any menu and "double click"
the LEFT button. To turn an option off, click on it again.

printer. And you can print on │ │ │ col.│ col.│
BOTH sides of the paper to cut └──────────┘ └─────┴─────┘
your paper costs in half.
In NORMAL portrait mode, MP prints text using the currently active
settings of your printer -- including fonts, line spacing, etc.
MP's NEWSPAPER, 2-Column format is terrific. With it you can print
up to 5 pages of text on EACH SIDE of the paper! In each column MP
prints 90+ lines of text, each line having 80 or more characters.
And, as when reading a newspaper, your eyes don't have to travel back
and forth as much when reading lines of text. (Note: The center
line in the Newspaper example above does not normally print.)
NEWSPAPER format requires a 20 character-per-inch (20 cpi, compressed
Elite or Superscript) font. Most newer Epson-compatible printers
have a 20 cpi font, as do DESKJET printers. And MP includes 4
20 cpi fonts you may use on either DESKJET or LASERJET printers!
Landscape Print Options

printers. └──────┴──────┘ └──────┴──────┘ └─────────────┘
MP's 5 landscape fonts help you print sideways even on Epson dot
matrix printers. In Booklet or Left-to-Right formats, our 16.67
pitch fonts let you print 2, 80-character columns of text on each
side of the page, with up to 66 lines per column. MP's 20 cpi
fonts, available with DeskJets and LaserJets, print up to 100
characters-per-line, and up to 75 lines per column.
Multi-Print's Wide, 1-Column format is ideal for spreadsheets, data
files and other wide text. Using MP's 16.67 fonts, you can print
up to 162 characters-per-line, and up to 66 lines-per-side -- even
on Epson printers. With MP's 20 cpi DeskJet or LaserJet font,
print 210 or more characters-per-line, and up to 75 lines-per-side.
Important Tips
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
All Users
─────────
Experiment by printing small text files before you print large
ones. This will help you learn how MP works and which options
work best on your printer -- without wasting reams of paper.
Read MP's "Tips" to help you choose appropriate options.
Registered Users: To see if MP's margin options are appropriate
for a particular file, use MP's "Print Range" option to print, say,
the first 1-4 pages. Print these 1-sided (for speed). Then examine
them to see if Top, Left or Right margins make sense. Some files,
like this one and MP.Doc already have left margins. With files
like these, it may be wise to set Left and Right margins to 0.
LaserJets
─────────
When printing 2-sided on LaserJets, do NOT use the REAR paper tray.
Why? Because when MP prints side #2, it expects the paper to be in
a particular order and facing a specific way. If you use the REAR
tray, the paper may be in the wrong order when you print side #2.
If your laser printer is NOT a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet, AND you
want to print 2-sided, experiment by printing short files to
determine the best way to put the paper back in the printer.
Non-HP laser printers may output paper in a different order than
HP LaserJets. So you may have to "shuffle" the pages into a
different order to print the 2nd side.
DeskJets: A RAM cartridge is required to download MP's fonts.
────────
DeskJets usually have internal 16.67 character-per-inch (cpi) and
20 cpi fonts. These let you use all of MP's print formats with no
need for external fonts. Many people, however, prefer MP's Helvetic
and Times Roman fonts over internal fonts. To use MP's fonts, your
DeskJet MUST have a RAM cartridge. DeskJets with NO RAM cartridge
simply won't accept downloaded fonts.
NOTE: MP prints in "Draft Quality" mode on DeskJets. This DOUBLES
the speed! If you prefer "Letter Quality" select MP's "Setup" option
and enter: <Esc>(s2Q ("2" = Letter Quality, "1" = Draft Quality).
To enter "<Esc>" just press ESCAPE. A left-pointing arrow appears.
Epson Printers
──────────────
ALWAYS ensure your printer begins printing on the FIRST 1-3 lines
of the paper -- especially if you print sideways! MP MUST begin
printing at the top of each page -- to ensure it doesn't print the
last few characters of a page on the next page, then skip a page!
To print sideways on Epson printers, MP uses graphics mode which
is slower than printing in text mode. Try MP's Booklet and Left-
to-Right landscape options, then decide if the speed of graphics
mode printing is acceptable to you. If not, use MP's Newspaper
option. If you use landscape Left-to-Right format, using MP's 1-
sided printing options lets you ignore your printer until it's done.
NOTE LQ-500 USERS: We've had reports these printers impose 1/2 inch
LEFT margins which push printing right (in landscape mode, that means
up), sometimes truncating the right-most 2-3 characters (in landscape
modes, the top 1-3 lines). If this happens, try shifting the paper
right. Or, in landscape modes, use a TOP MARGIN of 3-4 lines.
Special Note to Users of LQ Printers: Landscape Options
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
When LQ printers were introduced, Epson changed one of the ways
paper moves through the printer. As a result, we faced a dilemma
when designing MP's landscape options (Booklet, Left-to-Right, etc.):
- We could print 80-characters-per-line (cpl), but some letters
would overprint each other, resulting in hard-to-read text.
- Or we could print easier-to-read text, but reduce the
number of characters we could print per line.
We opted for easier-to-read text. As a result, on LQ printers, in
Booklet or Left-to-Right modes, MP prints 77 characters-per-line
instead of the 80 possible on FX, LaserJet or DeskJet printers.
(In Wide, 1-column mode, the maximum is about 156 cpl versus 162).
In many situations, this 77 cpl compromise may not matter: most
ASCII text files normally use a right margin of 72 or less -- so
nothing should be truncated. But text with lines greater than 77
or 156 cpl (source code, data files, etc.) may be truncated.
Printing the Second Side
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
The most important aspect of 2-sided printing is putting the paper
back in the printer so we print on the right side and the right
page. WATCH MP's TIPS. They'll explain how to put the paper back
in the printer. Please read and follow these tips.
LASERJETS If you use Newspaper or Left-to-Right formats, you might
and want to ROTATE the paper, then put it back in. EXPERIMENT
DESKJETS with short text files to see what you prefer.
EPSONS If your printer uses a "pull type" tractor, be sure
there's a blank page your tractor can grab onto when
you print the second side!

We are indebted to many people who were kind enough to test early
versions of Multi-Print. If you enjoy MP and find it useful, per-
haps you could applaud the contributions of the following people.
Without their help, many of MP's options would have been impossible.

System Requirements and Compatibility
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
MP works on IBM PCs and strict compatibles. DOS 2.1 is required.
DOS 3.3 or later is required if MP is to find itself, its conig-
uration file (MP.CFG) and its LaserJet and DeskJet font libraries.
If MP can't find font libraries, or if MP saves "MP.CFG" files all
over the place, read the section in MP.DOC about "SET MP-DIR=."
Printers Supported: MP offers 5 printing options (2 portrait and
3 landscape) on Epson, HP LaserJet and HP
DeskJet printers (and strict compatibles).
You may use the "Normal Portrait" mode and
print 1- or 2-sided on ANY printer.
Monitor: Use any monitor. MP's screen fonts and mouse
cursor shapes appear only on EGA/VGA monitors.
Windows/DESQview: MP automatically detects whether you're run-
ning it under Microsoft Windows or DESQview.
If so, MP won't use its custom screen fonts
or cursor shapes -- to prevent conflicts with
these operating systems.
